Tommy WilliamsThomas “Tommy” Lee Williams, Executive Vice President of The Plateau Group, Inc. (Plateau Insurance Company and Plateau Casualty Insurance Company) located in Crossville, TN, lost his battle with cancer and passed away on Tuesday evening, June 10, 2014.

Tommy was born on June 28, 1951 in Nashville, TN. He graduated from Glencliff High School in Nashville in 1969, David Lipscomb College in Nashville in 1973, and attended graduate school at Vanderbilt University.

Tommy married his high school sweetheart, Cheryl Empson Williams in 1969. He and Cheryl have one son, Robert, also a Plateau employee.

Tommy worked as an actuary in Nashville before joining Plateau in 1983. In addition to his actuarial duties, Tommy wrote many of the computer programs used by Plateau over the years for its insurance needs and was in charge of the day to day operations of the company. Working with Dick Williams, they grew Plateau from a single state, single company credit insurer to a multi-company, 48 states credit insurer along with international business with the Pacific Island countries.

Tommy enjoyed music and maintained a vast collection of recordings. He was an excellent photographer. His blood ran “Big Orange” as a diehard fan of University of Tennessee athletics. Tommy fought a hard fight against his cancer over the last four years, always keeping a positive attitude that things would get better.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cheryl Williams and one son, Robert Williams; sisters: Leslie Ryan of Nashville, Debbie Vitale (Tony) of Ocala, FL; two nephews: Anthony and John Vitale of FL; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Roy and Jewell Williams; and infant triplet siblings Jane, James and Jamie Williams.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 14, at Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, located next door to the Plateau office building. Friends are invited to gather at the office after the service for a celebration of his life.
