Hugh Watts Randall, Jr., M.D.

Hugh Watts Randall, Jr., M.D., 63, died July 1, 2012 in Crossville, Tennessee. A former resident of Georgia, Dr. Randall had moved to Crossville, Tennessee with his wife to work in private practice at Cumberland Medical Center.

He was born on January 19, 1949 in Cedartown, Georgia to Hugh and Madge Randall. He graduated from Cedartown High School in 1967. He attended Emory at Oxford College, where he began his major in Theology. While at Oxford, he was called to pursue a medical degree instead.

Dr. Randall earned his Medical Degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. He completed an Internship and Residency in Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory University and Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Randall was honored as Chief Administrative Resident while at Emory University and Affiliated Hospitals.

Dr. Randall received numerous awards and honors throughout his OB/GYN career, including Distinguished Chair Emeritus at Emory University, Distinguished Service Award from the Georgia Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, and Outstanding Faculty Award from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He served as the President of the Georgia Obstetrical and Gynecological Society; Vice Chairman of the Georgia General Assembly’s Conference on Access to Health Care for Mothers and Children in Atlanta, Georgia; and numerous consultations, committee memberships, high ranking administrative appointments, and academic and professional appointments.

Dr. Randall’s research focused on high risk obstetrics. He received an impressive amount of grants for his research. Dr. Randall’s numerous research projects are published in peer-reviewed journals. He was a sought-after lecturer, seminar presenter, and visiting professor.

Dr. Randall was a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was also a member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the Georgia Obstetrical and Gynecological Society. He was an affiliate member of prestigious Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

As a professor, Dr. Randall loved teaching residents at Emory University, New York University, and Lincoln Memorial-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harrogate, Tennessee. He had a passion for helping others. He made trips to Thailand and the Republic of Georgia to assist former medical residents with high-risk surgeries in high poverty areas. He had a passion for knowledge and lived by the Hippocratic Oath.  He was a lifetime member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Madge Randall. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Randall; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth and Anna Randall; brother-in-law, Michael Weeks; and mother-in-law, Lorene Fine. The greatest times of his life were vacations to Disney and trips on many cruises with his wife and daughters.

A private family service was held in Rockmart, Georgia on July 6, 2012. A long-time friend, Dr. Barry Lee Blackburn, was the officiator of the service.
